Origanum vulgare is a well-known member of the mint family. Warm, aromatic and slightly bitter, oregano is a herbaceous perennial and a common garden plant. Native to the warm, dry climate of the Mediterranean, the plant's volatile oils concentrate in sunlight, giving oregano its distinct flavour. The oregano leaf is a familiar spice used in culinary dishes and can also be infused in oil or brewed as a tea. This ingredient is a staple of traditional Calabrian cuisine and, among its many beneficial properties, can also be used to aid digestion. The best quality oregano is grown in a hot, dry climate, with the skilful processing of Calabrian producers who nurture its every aspect, fragrance and flavour with great love and respect. The name derives from the Greek and means 'mountain of joy'. The sunlight helps concentrate the essential oils that give oregano its flavour.
